Dear Reader,
Happy New Year! What a year it’s proving already. I am incredibly grateful to everyone who nominated and voted for me as Bond Woman of the Year in the Bond Community Awards 2022, and I’m amazed to say that I won, beating Dame Judi Dench and Barbara Broccoli by a nose! It was a hotly contested category, with so many brilliant Bond creators. You can hear about all of the awards in Roland Hulme’s announcement video – if you’re especially interested in the other amazing female nominees, go to the 29 minute mark, where you’ll learn a bit more about Ladies Who Bond; Dr Lisa Funnell; Birb James Birb; and Dressed to Kill.
There were so many deserved winners overall, but I’d like to give an especially big shout out to David Lowbridge-Ellis at Licence to Queer, who won Writer of the Year. Licence to Queer is always thought-provoking and inspiring, and I loved talking to David about Double or Nothing – you can watch our interview here. David has been an amazing champion of the book, and though I don’t usually read reviews or think pieces about my work, I made an exception for his article ‘004 reasons why Joseph Dryden is the gay hero we’ve been waiting for.’ I was glad I did because it became one of the things that made me proudest after the publication of Double or Nothing. And a big shout out to David Zaritsky for winning Man of the Year for his channel The Bond Experience! David is such a generous and creative leader in the community – I loved our conversation about Double or Nothing, which you can watch here, and I’m looking forward to speaking again soon ahead of the US publication of the book.
And lastly, a massive thank you and bravo to Roland Hulme, the creator of the Bond Community Awards, for putting together such a fun and rich celebration of this diverse and creative fandom. Roland is a brilliant writer and interviewer, and I’ve been so grateful for all of his support. You can watch our interview here, and Roland’s review of my first novel Testament, here. Cheers, Roland! And a last, huge thanks to everyone for this honour. I feel incredibly touched as a lifelong Bond fan – to receive this from my community means everything to me. I’m raising a martini to you all.
What a lovely start to an exciting year ahead! Some things to look out for:
On the 2nd of February, my next novel, A Wild & True Relation, will be published! After fourteen years in the making, I can’t quite believe it.
There are just a handful of tickets left for the launch at Dr Johnson’s House in London. Come along for cocktails, live music and reading, Devon-inspired treats and to chat and get your book signed!
If you can’t make it to London, there will also be a special launch event in Edinburgh by the sea at Portobello Books! I’ll be in conversation with the brilliant Fiona Mozley.
On the 23rd of February, Double or Nothing will be published in Spain by Roca Libros as Doble o nada. I’m so excited to head out there and meet press and celebrate the book.
Then I’ll be going to Leipzig in May to celebrate the German publication of Double or Nothing by Cross Cult as Doppelt oder nichts.
And on the 11th of April, Double or Nothing will be published in the US! Watch this space for details of interviews and more…
Plus, of course, the publication of Book Two in the Double O trilogy, more on that soon…
